DreamHost Review

DreamHost seems to be a favorite among Internet marketers… and I’m not sure I understand why. Support is mediocre, the control panel is substandard and the bad uptime certainly didn’t woo me. But the icing on the cake was the hilariously pathetic way DreamHost tries to make amends for not meeting their promises – I’ve shared a personal story about that below.
I’m sure I’ll catch some flak for slapping this golden cow, but I’ve always tried to present my honest impression. Without further adieu, here’s why DreamHost scored so low:

Things I Like:

  • DreamHost offers a 2-week Free Trial, which is good for those who want to take a test-drive before committing.
  • There’s a 97-day money-back guarantee. Two words of caution though: PayPal payments are non-refundable and there are no prorated refunds after the 97-day period.
  • Several hosting packages are available among the shared, VPS and dedicated servers. You won’t pay for anything you don’t need.
  • You’re allowed unlimited domains on your plans.
  • I’m almost positive the support is 100% U.S. based, so language barriers won’t be an issue.

Things I Hate:

  • The shared hosting packages are quite expensive. You get can a coupon that will drive the price down, but this only works for the first year. After that, you’re looking at a little more than $100 per year.
  • They don’t use the standard cPanel as a control panel. DreamHost’s alternative is much clunkier, has fewer features and is a lot more difficult to use. Beginners will have a hard time and some vets will still be frustrated. The only cool part is that the billing is all inside the control panel.
  • No phone support is available.
  • Support tickets normally take around four hours before a reply (if you email during business hours). Response times are much slower during non-business hours, making the 24/7 support offering less valuable.
  • Terrible uptime! I monitored my uptime over two months and saw a 99.54% average, among the worst of anyone I’ve measured.
  • Their policies for when uptime is not met are incredibly dumb (more below).

Uptime Policy
They offer a 100% uptime guarantee – but you better read the fine print.
I reported a downtime of four hours over a period of two weeks and told them they obviously weren’t meeting the guarantee. Most hosts will give you a full month of credit if their guarantee isn’t met.
Instead, DreamHost takes your yearly payment and divides it by 365 to give you a breakdown of your daily price. In my case, this worked out to about $0.06 per day. Under their policy, they credit you one day for every hour your site goes down.
Given that I was down for four hours, I should have been credited $0.24, but the customer service rep was “feeling generous” and rounded it up to $1.00.
Wow – A whole dollar! Stay tuned for my post on how I spent it.
In my opinion, having your host down for a full hour is worth much more than just a one day of hosting credit. This was more like a slap in the face than a means of making amends but DreamHost just doesn’t get it.

Final Take

At this point I can’t recommend DreamHost to anyone. They’ve fallen behind their more capable competition in just about every way.
